Even royals top up retirement pots!

Sarah Ferguson, aka Fergie the Duchess of York, is 50 – typically an age at which women panic about their ability to retain their earning power and start topping their pots in preparation for an early retirement – and like 50+ women everywhere Rhoda can understand why Fergie is desperate for money but is aghast at the recent ‘cash for access’ scam she fell into and is pleased that Oprah Winfrey is bailing her out with a sympathy spot on her highly influential show.

“I think Fergie is doing a wonderful job digging herself out of the financial hole she fell into,” says Rhoda, “but a sympathy spot on the Oprah Show will surely open many more doors for the Duchess and keep the money rolling in, hopefully enough to pay off her debts and stash a lot more away into her retirement pot.”

“Let’s face it, Fergie is hardly the Barbara Cartland type, happy to churn out formulaic children’s books for the rest of her life,” says Rhoda, “and, because her hopes of remarrying Prince Andrew and living happily and wealthily ever after may never be realized, she needs to have enough ‘potted’ wealth to keep her in the style she’s grown accustomed to.”

“The recent global financial crash has impoverished a lot of formerly wealthy people,” says Rhoda, “and although I am reasonably secure, actually quite well off, there is absolutely no guarantee that some catastrophe won’t wipe me out and because of my age I, too, am amassing more assets and topping my retirement pot – and I’m sure Oprah is doing the same thing!”

“I don’t blame Fergie one bit for pulling out all stops in order to get out of debt and put something away for her old age,” says Rhoda, “but her first tactic should have been to reduce her spending rather than do something illegal.”

“She has carved out a career for herself purely on her former royal connections and would never have sold any of her children’s books without that connection,” says Rhoda. “Her talent is not in her writing but in her celebrity, and she knows it. She thrives in the limelight and with advancing age she is also well aware that it will all come to an end pretty soon – as it will for Oprah.”

“Nobody wants to pay big money to hear some old lady – with or without royal connections – talk inanities promoting this or that cause,” laughs Rhoda. “Her time in the limelight is fading out fast, and that’s why she needs money, and plenty of it, fast!”

“A sympathy spot on Oprah’s show will surely top Fergie’s retirement pot!”
